Tournament Recaps - First Weekend!

The boys kick off the season with the Badger Boy Series last Friday night! 11's - 13's played a few matches and let's see how they did!

11 BOYS

We are super excited to be offering an 11 - boys team this year. On Friday, The boys got to compete in the Badger Boys series in Menomonee Falls. This was most players' first time playing an actual game and it was super exciting to watch them play.

The first Match I AM faced off against Milwaukee Stings 12-2's team. With only a few practices under our belts, I was encouraged with how well everyone did with rotations and all of the game start-up procedures. In the first game, I AM started off slow falling behind 2-14. However, I AM refused to give up and continued to win some really nice rallies and took the lead at 22-21. The team would eventually loose 25-22, but we were definitely encouraged by how we played. A slow start in Game 2 also hindered I AM's chances. I AM grabbed some momentum on an overpass CRUSH by Ryan S., however that was not enough to overcome the early deficit as I AM lost 20-25.

In I AM's 2nd and final match of the day, getting off to a good start was a point of focus. Cole Vanden Burg Helped the team do just that. With 6 ACE's and a 14-0 run to start the game, I AM never looked back beating South Port's 12-1 team. Cole again started game 2 with a 6-0 serving run with 5 ACEs to earn a coveted serving professional pin. The balance of the game, the team continued to impress with great defense and many attacks on the offensive side of the ball.

Ball control has been a main focus of this team from day one and it showed throughout the day with many 3 contact attacks and great defensive rallies. The guys were super helpful and supportive of each other, and we are extremely encouraged about how things went today!

12 BOYS

I AM 12-1 boys had a standout performance for our first tournament on Friday 12/6! The first game we faced Sting 11-1 winning in two sets, 25-23 and 25-18. Miles Derzon earned a Top Server pin tallying 5 aces during the match. Martin Culav had a stellar performance with 5 kills and 2 aces. Other top performers for the match included Aaron Gundrum with 3 kills/1 dig, Bode Roche with 2 aces/3 assists, and Everett Matous with 4 aces/1 dig.

We then battled Club W 12 taking home the victory in 2 very close sets, 25-23 and 25-23. Bode Roche earned himself a Top Server pin with 7 aces for the match. Defensive specialist Owen Sullivan stood out as a top defender with 2 digs and a server receive percentage of 2.75/3 for the entire match. Other top athletes for this match included Edison Mock with 2 aces/1 dig and Patrick Mortiz with 3 aces/2 digs/3.0 server receive stat. We fought our way out of large point deficits not only with our physical performance but with our spirit.

This team has incredible positivity and knows how to have fun on the court. One athlete stood out in particular for his athleticism, sportsmanship, and bright presence on and off the court. Jacob Mueller your hard work does not go unnoticed and congratulations on earning Tournament MVP for our first tournament. What a great way to start off our season!
